National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)

National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)

Formerly the Black Greek Council, the purpose of the National Pan-Hellenic Councill is to foster close, dynamic relationships between Black Greek chapters and among all Greeks at Kent State University. NPHC administers business related to the overall conduct of activities by enforcing regulations governing the member organizations. NPHC members also serve the university community by enhancing educational opportunities and community service projects through leadership development and civic involvement throughout the surrounding area.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council is composed of nine National Greek Letter community service fraternities and sororities. They are Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho and Zeta Phi Beta sororities and Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Phi Beta Sigma and Omega Psi Phi and Iota Phi Theta fraternities.

The Black Greek letter movement was inaugurated in 1906 as a means by which cultural interaction and community service could be maintained. Today, NPHC currently is composed of more than 900,000 affiliated members in undergraduate and alumni councils in all regions of the United States and abroad. The NPHC stresses and provides action strategies on matters of mutual concern and serves as the conduit through which these action and plans are put into effect.

The Kent campus council of the NPHC is composed of six of the nine organizations. These organizations are unique with respect to other Greek letter organizations in that they have a profound commitment to providing community service and uplifting/promoting the general public welfare. Some of the projects these organizations are involved in include: voter registration and education, aid to the needy and elderly, bone marrow donor drives, programs to eliminate illiteracy, career training, health care awareness programs and support of local community service agencies.
